Tech Analyst Reviews Every US Hearing Aid Option, From $50 to $5,000 Clinics, and Reveals What She'd Actually Recommend
About this story: Janet Morris is a composite audio-electronics analyst character. The narrative and customer scenarios are illustrative composites, not the personal account or medical endorsement of an independent doctor.
My name is Janet Morris. I’m an audio-electronics analyst, examining how hearing devices are built, what their components cost, and how they perform.
Every week I hear from people in their 60s, 70s and 80s stuck in the same impossible situation.
Most people pay the full price themselves.
Private clinics will see them tomorrow, but they want $5,000 or more.
And Amazon is full of cheap devices that promise the world for $40.
Most people end up doing nothing. They turn the TV up. They ask people to repeat themselves. They stop going to places they used to love.
So I bought every option with my own money and tested them all. On real people. Over 6 months.
Here's what I found.
Medicare
Let's get this out of the way first. Most people end up paying the full price themselves.
You pay into the system your entire working life, and the one thing you actually need, they won't cover.
Most people find out the hard way: you're on your own.
The private clinics
Median clinic pairs cost about $5,000 per HearingTracker's survey of U.S. buyers.
The technology is good. But looking at the hardware and the business model tells you what you are paying for.
So what is that $5,000 paying for?
- The clinic on Main Street
- The sales staff and their commission (yes, many stores pay staff a percentage of what they sell you, which is why they always recommend the premium range)
- The area manager, the head office, the television ads
Add batteries, parts and repairs, and over 10 years you're closer to $8,000.
The cost leaves many retirees facing difficult choices about their hearing.
Amazon
This is where I get genuinely angry.
What Amazon sells are not hearing aids. They're amplifiers.
An amplifier makes everything louder. Voices, traffic, the fridge, your own breathing, all at the same volume.
It cannot separate speech from background noise. That's why voices stay muffled while everything else gets painfully loud.
A real hearing aid has a digital processing chip that filters sound. It makes voices clearer and pushes background noise down.
If you've tried Amazon and given up, you weren't trying hearing aids. You were trying amplifiers.
Please don't let that experience put you off.
Direct-to-Consumer: Comfi ($249)
This is the one that surprised me.
When I first heard about Comfi, I assumed it was another Amazon-style amplifier with better marketing. $249 for a pair of hearing aids? It didn't seem possible.
So I opened them up.
A digital processing chip and multi-channel sound filtering, not amplification.
Every pair is quality-checked before dispatch.
In 2022, Comfi chose to sell directly to customers. No clinic, no commission, no markup. With almost none of the costs the clinics carry, Comfi can sell for an honest price.
Rechargeable, so no batteries. 30 days at home to try them. 6-month warranty. If anything goes wrong, they replace it.
In my testing, most people couldn't reliably tell the difference between Comfi and the hearing aids costing thousands.
The feedback was the same, over and over: "Why didn't someone tell me about this sooner?"
"TV volume went from 50 down to 8." Robert, 78
My recommendation
If you're like most people I've worked with, who can't justify thousands and don't want to waste money on Amazon devices that whistle and screech, try Comfi first.
$249. Same core technology as the private clinics. 30 days at home. If they don't work for you, just send them back.
I recommended them to my own father. 84 years old, stubborn as they come. Wouldn't wear cheap drugstore devices. Wouldn't pay $4,500 at a clinic.
Now wearing Comfi every day. "Should've done this years ago," he told me last week.
Since this article was published, Comfi has gained tremendous attention and interest.
Comfi hearing aids are available for $249 per pair, with the matching charging case. See the product page for the current offer and full details.
Plus, every order comes with a 30-day risk free trial at home, 6-month warranty. If you don't experience clearer hearing within 30 days, you can just send them back.
Comments
I'll be honest, my first thought was that Comfi is a scam. $249 claiming to do what a $5,000 clinic pair does. Nothing in my life that sounded too good to be true ever was. I only ordered because you can send them back within 30 days. Three weeks with Comfi now and they are excellent. I hear my wife clearly at the dinner table again. Should have ordered them a year ago.

Same exact thought Frank. Figured worst case I send the Comfi pair back and I'm out nothing. I kept them. They work great and I wear them every day.

Good article. Clear and to the point for once. The bit explaining amplifiers versus actual hearing aids should be common knowledge and it's not. I bought two pairs of Amazon amplifiers before I understood the difference. Comfi is a real hearing aid and it shows.

For two years I told my wife everyone was mumbling. Turns out it was me, not them. Hard thing for a man to admit. Wish I'd stopped being stubborn a lot sooner. The Comfi pair has been in every day since it arrived and I can finally follow conversations again.

My worry with Comfi was the setup. I'm not good with gadgets and I figured there'd be an app and a manual the size of a phone book. There was none of that. Charged them, put them in, done. They worked right away. If I can do it anyone can.

Two weeks with Comfi now. Sent my old clinic pair back and got every dollar returned. Comfi works just as well for a fraction of the price. Already told three guys at the VFW. Should've found these sooner.

My son sent me this after I missed another call from my daughter. Just ordered Comfi with the discount. On Social Security so $249 is a lot easier than the price the clinic quoted me. Fingers crossed, will report back.

Margaret you will be fine. I was nervous ordering Comfi too. Best decision I made all year, I hear my grandkids on the phone again. Come back and tell us.

Medicare not covering a dime of this is criminal. 45 years I paid into that system. This article made me angry for all the right reasons. Sharing it with everyone I know.

TV volume went from 44 down to 11 with Comfi. My wife can't believe it. Had Walgreens drugstore aids for years but the Comfi pair is smaller, no whistling, and they recharge. No more fumbling with batteries every Monday.
